Debunking the Tow-Data Resale Myth

for Wreckers on Thursday, August 6, 2015 by Auto Data Direct

Recently, ADD was asked how we use the information we receive from towing customers on towed and impounded vehicles, owner and lienholder inquiries and notification letters. “Does ADD sell information on towed cars to lenders?” the user asked. “Why did a lienholder call about an impound that I hadn’t mailed letters on yet?”

Questions about who has access to sensitive business information are important in a web-based world where data has become a commodity. In light of this, we at ADD felt that we needed to go on the record regarding how we handle our customers' data.

First, the big question - ADD has not and does not give, share or sell ANY of its customers’ data to ANY other company, group or entity. We don’t sell our customer lists. We don’t share the information on the vehicles you impound or the notification letters you send. We don’t sell the salvage or total loss information you report to NMVTIS. We don’t sell aggregated data about the number or types of cars towed, tags issued, liens placed or titles applied for. The information you share with ADD as you use our products and services is used solely for your intended purpose.

The only exception to this disclosure policy is when ADD receives a written request from Law Enforcement or a State DMV official for specific information about a customer account or VIN activity.

To address a few of the most common questions we receive from towing customers:

  • **How do lenders get information impounded vehicles before towing notification letters are mailed?

**

Asset monitoring services have been around for several years. These private businesses work with lenders, insurers, owners and other interested parties to look for potentially adverse activity on enrolled vehicles (i.e. impound, theft, export, etc.) .

  • **Where do the asset monitoring companies get their impound information?

**

ADD’s understanding is that an increasing number of law enforcement agencies are sharing impound, license plate reader, red-light camera and other data collected with asset monitoring companies, and that data is then used to notify interested parties and other law enforcement agencies about changes to the status of the vehicles.

  • **Does ADD share or sell its towing customers' impound information with lienholders?

**

No. ADD does not provide, give or sell ANY of its customers’ impound data to ANY company, customer or entity.

ADD obtains a variety of data from third party vendors, such as National Vehicle Services (NVS). ADD incorporates this third-party data into its records and services to provide ALL users with a better, more useful products. For example, corporate customers who pull a NMVTIS vehicle record benefit from the addition of lien and national theft data obtained from NVS. IF any impound information is incorporated into ADD records or services, it comes through these third-party connections, NOT from ADD customers' impound records, tow tickets or letters.

ADD has worked hard to earn the trust of its users, and we are committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of our customers' information.
