Georgia NMVTIS Reporting Law Helps Identify VIN Fraud

According to the Atlanta press, two Decatur men are accused of scamming recyclers into paying them for dozens of cars the two had stolen by using VIN numbers from cars already scrapped. These men would go to scrap yards after stealing vehicles and find others of the same make and model.

With NMVTIS enforcement occurring both statewide and at the federal level, the last thing salvage businesses should need to worry about is inadvertently purchasing a stolen vehicle. All over the country law enforcement agencies are reporting increases in the sale of stolen cars to unsuspecting parts and metal recyclers. In Georgia, it’s even been reported that criminals are stealing VIN plates from vehicles already in salvage yards and placing them on stolen vehicles, in order to sell the stolen car for scrap.

NMVTIS Enforcement Ongoing, More Businesses Fined

In May, the Department of Justice reported that in addition to the [$59,540 NMVTIS reporting penalty](/news/nmvtis/enforcement-leads- to-NM-fines) assessed to CBH Trucking and Salvage in New Mexico, two additional companies have received final determination penalties with a combined total of over $110,000. It was also stated that there are eight ongoing non-compliance cases with potential penalties ranging from $127,000 to 3.

Tallahassee, FL: Auto Data Direct, Inc. (ADD) announced it has donated $2,500 to the Brother’s Brother Foundation (BBF) Hurricane Sandy relief effort. The donation came in part from National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) reporting fees for vehicles damaged by Hurricane Sandy collected by ADD from junk, salvage, and insurance companies using its web based system.

As the new mandatory Florida ELT system comes online and lenders statewide begin to use the system, the most common questions ADD has been asked revolve around how to convert one of the new electronic lien titles to a paper title, either before or after a lien is satisfied. Under the new ELT regulations, the paperwork and process required to apply for titles remains the same, except that title application forms now require the lender’s ELT number (called a DMV Acct # on the HSMV 82040).
