How To Avoid Buying A Stolen Car

for nmvtis, Salvage, Salvage/Junk Yards, Shredders, Wreckers and Wreckers on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 by Jay Svendsen

With NMVTIS enforcement occurring both statewide and at the federal level, the last thing salvage businesses should need to worry about is inadvertently purchasing a stolen vehicle. All over the country law enforcement agencies are reporting increases in the sale of stolen cars to unsuspecting parts and metal recyclers. In Georgia, it’s even been reported that criminals are stealing VIN plates from vehicles already in salvage yards and placing them on stolen vehicles, in order to sell the stolen car for scrap.

How do businesses protect themselves against car thieves trying to pass off stolen vehicles to a recycler? ADD’s National Title Pointer with Theft check combines salvage and title information from the National Motor Vehicle Title Information system (NMVTIS) with lien and national theft data into a single report, allowing auto recyclers to find out in seconds, with only the VIN, if a car has been reported stolen, or if it has already been reported in the possession of another recycler. With that information, a recycler can make an informed decision as to whether or not to purchase a vehicle, rather than find out it’s stolen after he’s paid out for the car, or worse, when law enforcement comes knocking.

Give yourself the protection and peace of mind that comes with knowing a vehicle hasn’t been reported stolen before you buy it. ADD can help you check the theft status of a potential purchase as it comes across the scale or into your yard. With metal prices up and car thieves coming up with new and different ways to dispose of stolen property, businesses have to do everything they can to protect themselves from unnecessary problems like the headache of dealing with a stolen car.

The National Title Pointer with Theft and Lien search is available in every ADD account. Check out a sample report, email ADD or call one of our live customer service representatives at 855-300-3455 to learn more.
