As the Department of Justice begins another NMVTIS enforcement effort, it’s a good idea to verify your compliance with the federal reporting requirements.

Any business buying or selling more than five total loss, salvage, junk or parts vehicles per year should be reporting those vehicle to the federal NMVTIS (National Motor Vehicle Title Information System) database. Often, a company will think that they are reporting through their state or through their management system, only to find out they aren’t compliant when they receive a non-reporting notification from the Department of Justice.

A free way to verify that your NMVTIS reports are being received by the national database is through the Department of Justice website. You can search by your NMVTIS ID number or your business name to make sure your business has reported within the last 30 days, as required.

ADD also offers its users an easy way to provide detailed proof of compliance.

• Upload Compliance Reports

ADD users can access a printable list of the number of unique VINs reported under their NMVTIS ID, by month. If a business has more than one NMVTIS ID, each ID will be listed separately. To access the report, select the NMVTIS Vehicle Upload tab, then the NMVTIS Compliance Report tab, after log in.

• Reporting Receipts

Many states now require specific proof that a vehicle has been reported in order to process salvage title applications, certificates of destruction or other state forms. To meet this need, ADD offers printable receipts listing the VIN, the date and time the vehicle was reported and the reported status. Reporting receipts are available in the Record Manifest for Full Service customers, or via email for Basic Service users.

NMVTIS reporting by businesses is a federal requirement separate from state requirements or processes. ADD is the authorized agent for scrap metal processors, secondary metal recyclers and used motor vehicle parts dealers in Georgia to fulfill their state regulations. Currently, Georgia is the only state that offers a consolidated reporting process for auto recyclers and secondary metal recyclers in that state.
