Why Not Me When it Comes to DMV123?

on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 by Beth Williams

You see the number 33 now when ADD talks about our growing DMV123 real-time access to state owner and lienholder records. ADD is proud of the fact that it offers access to more real-time states than any other company of its kind. But you might scratch your head and say “I don’t have 33 states in my drop-down box. Why is that?” Good question!

The federal law that outlines specifically what uses are permissible for accessing this personal data is the Federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (DPPA). But each state also has its own rules regarding who they will allow access to the information. It will never be broader than the federal law but it can be more restrictive. For example, a state may allow tow operators to access records through their ADD account but no other industry. Or, a state may allow insurers and financial institutions access but not others. That’s why ADD only displays the states available to your company when you click on the DMV123 tab in your account.

The laws (both federal and state) governing these records also determine what you use them for. You can’t just run a record out of curiosity. It has to be for a specific DPPA purpose that meets the letter of the law. Here are some examples of how ADD customers in a variety of industries use DMV123 to improve their business’s efficiency.

  • Tow Operators who now have access to 30 individual states use the records to quickly notify vehicle owners and lienholders when a car is impounded.
  • Lending institutions have access to 31 states and use our system as part of the underwriting process.
  • Insurers can get records from 32 states and may use the records as part of the claims investigation process.
  • Automobile dealers benefit from access to 30 states when verifying ownership for a trade-in.

All of our business customers have access to the National Title Pointer which combines information from the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) with theft and lien data in a single convenient report. This report provides the current state of title, titling history, and brand information from the junk, salvage, and insurance industries.

At ADD we’re working every day to enhance access to valuable tools like DMV123 to help you improve your business’s efficiency and effectiveness.
